Zero Waste Yukon congratulates Yukon Chamber of Mines

November 19th, 2014 by

Whitehorse – Zero Waste Yukon supports and applauds the work of the Yukon Chamber of Mines in hosting the Yukon’s first conference that is working towards zero waste.

The 2014 Yukon Geoscience Forum & Trade Show started on November 15th and runs until November 19th with events, speakers and trade show at the Coast High Country Inn, the Yukon Convention Centre and the Best Western Gold Rush Inn.

“This is an exciting event for Zero Waste Yukon and our partners and stakeholders,” says Lee Vincent, Zero Waste Yukon Coordinator. “The Yukon Chamber of Mines has shown real leadership in moving their forum and trade show towards zero waste and we have been happy to support them in this initiative. Their proactive work demonstrates we can all work towards zero waste and have a real impact while doing it!”

A number of organizations and businesses deserve special mention for their efforts:

  • Stantec for their efforts and support in coordination and execution of the forum and trade show
  • The Whitehorse Atom Mustangs for helping out as members of the Resource Rescue Team
  • Raven Recycling for their expertise and logistical support

The 2014 Geoscience Forum and Trade Show has incorporated a variety of Zero Waste tools over the 5 days including advice to exhibitors prior to the conference; work with the venues to ensure no food or condiments are served in disposal, single-use containers; well marked bins for all materials; the use of a Resource Rescue Team; digital signage and information in all delegate packages.

Results of the event will be made public and lessons learned will become part of a Zero Waste Event toolkit currently under development by Zero Waste Yukon.
