Over 350 students to take part in Earth Day activity
Whitehorse – Zero Waste Yukon with the help of Raven Recycling, has provided 8 schools in 4 communities with Waste on Your Waist toolkits to help celebrate Earth Day on April 22.
“The response from schools to our free Waste on Your Waist toolkit has been phenomenal,” says Joy Snyder. “We figure over 350 students and their teachers will be spending some part of Earth Day thinking and learning about the waste we produce.”
Waste on Your Waist is an activity where participants attach a bag to themselves over the course of the day and collect all the waste they produce. At the end of the allotted time period, a waste audit is completed to analyze what people are consuming and how to dispose of the waste produced.
Waste on Your Waist events have occurred during Waste Reduction Week in October of 2013 and by the Haines Junction Village Council in 2014. Support for the development, assembly and translation of the toolkits was provided by the Community Development Fund.
“We are really excited about students learning more about how to reduce their waste and how to dispose of materials properly,” says Joy Snyder. “And we now have a toolkit – in english and french – that everyone can use for education purposes anytime of the year.”
Waste on your Waist participating schools are: St. Elias Community School, Robert Service, FH Collins Secondary School, Selkirk Elementary School, Jack Hulland Elementary School, Porter Creek Secondary School, Ecole Emilie Tremblay and Teslin School.
