National Waste Reduction Week lays ground for Zero Waste campaign
Whitehorse – National Waste Reduction Week (October 21 to 16) kicks off with a new partnership of organizations, businesses, institutions and governments working together on a Zero Waste Education Campaign. Zero Waste is a philosophy that challenges us to maximize the life of any product by reusing, recycling, reselling, refurbishing AND composting while minimizing the amount of waste we generate in the first place.
“Waste Reduction Week is a perfect time to kick off a longer education campaign”, says Raven Recycling ED Joy Snyder. “We’ve been talking for a long time about the need for public education about waste management and now, with the City of Whitehorse Solid Waste Action Plan and the Territorial government’s stated desire to work towards Zero Waste, the timing is perfect.”
Partners currently involved in the education campaign are: YG Community Services, YG Education, City of Whitehorse, Yukon College, P&M Recycling, Raven Recycling, Boreal Compost, Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce, Yukon Chamber of Commerce, Yukon Conservation Society, Yukon Teacher’s Association and the Association of Yukon Communities.
Events planned during Waste Reduction Week include tours of local facilities including the Whitehorse landfill, the compost facility, Raven Recycling, P&M Recycling, Yukon College and Ecole Whitehorse Elementary. The public is invited to participate in the Cardboard Crush Scavenger Hunt and take part in the 24 Hour Waste on your Waist Event. A free showing of “Garbage: The Revolution Starts at Home” happens on Thursday evening at 7:00 pm at the Old Firehall.
The Zero Waste education campaign, to run from November to June, 2014 will focus on tangible, pragmatic actions that people can take in their respective schools, homes, workplaces and communities to reduce their waste.
