Haines Junction Initiates Waste Watch Week
Haines Junction: The Mayor and Council of Haines Junction announced today that Waste Watch Week will run from March 31st to April 6th, 2014. Council voted in favour of this initiative which will see each Council member and their family collect all their waste for one week. At the end of the week, all waste will be taken to Whitehorse for a waste audit by Raven Recycling staff. Once complete, Mayor and Council will return to the Junction for another week of waste collection to see how much they can divert from the waste stream.
“This is a fun way for us to take the lead on waste reduction and help educate the public at the same time,” says Mayor Michael Crawshay. “Time and again governments, often led by non-profits, tout the importance ofrecycling and reducing our waste. We think it’s time we lead by example.”
“Spending the weekend with our hockey team in Watson Lake, I saw how much waste we were producin g, and felt it was time for us to act,” says Councillor Dave Weir. “I’m really looking forward to seeing how much waste we produce and how much can be diverted from the landfill through composting, recycling and other mean s.”
The first waste audit will take place at Raven Recycling, 100 Galena Road on Monday, April 7th at 1 p.m. Mayor and Council will get feedback from that audit on what was produced and what can be diverted. The second waste audit will occur in Haines Junction at the Village Recycle Centre on Wednesday, April 16th at 1 p.m. Results will be made public after both audits. Press and public are welcome to attend to see how much progress has been made over the two week period.
“This is a great initiative coming out of a community that is already doing a lot to reduce their waste and educate the public,” says Joy Snyder, Executive Director of Raven Recycling. “We’re pleased to be able to be a part of it.”
