Bag It – Free Film Screening
October 17 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pmFree
Award-winning documentary Bag It comes to Whitehorse
Whitehorse, Yukon – Zero Waste Yukon is hosting a free public screening of the award-winning environmental documentary Bag It at Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre on October 17. This event is part of Waste Reduction Week in Canada, which takes place October 15-21 across the nation in support of waste reduction initiatives.
Bag It follows “everyman” Jeb Berrier as he tries to make sense of our dependence on plastic bags. Although his quest starts out small, Jeb soon learns that the problem extends past landfills to oceans, rivers and ultimately human health.
The film explores these issues and identifies how our daily reliance on plastic threatens not only waterways and marine life, but human health, too. Plastic production uses significant natural resources and generates significant emissions. In the Yukon, plastics take up large amounts of landfill space and escape collection to litter our wild spaces and interfere with wildlife.
The screening at Yukon Beringia Centre is part of Zero Waste Yukon’s campaign to curb the use of single-use plastics in the territory. Many North American cities including Washington, DC and San Francisco, as well as countries like Ireland, Italy and China have implemented fees or bans on single-use disposable bags, with positive results.
Zero Waste Yukon is committed to working collaboratively to reduce the single-use plastics used and disposed of in Yukon landfills in order to create a cleaner, healthier community for future generations.
